Getting It Straight

Posture: It will make or break you—literally. Have a good standing posture while moving. This, in turn, will help you move toward a better and healthier body position. Hold this position for up to 1 minute. This sequence of gentle yoga backbends helps improve posture by strengthening the main posture support muscles of the back.

In an age where so many of us live sedentary lifestyles , our bone, muscle and joint health is already at risk and poor posture only makes the situation worse. Dr. Loth suggests regularly exercising your back muscles, receiving massage therapy, visiting the chiropractor for adjustments if necessary, and making a conscious effort to sit or stand without slouching.

I like yoga because it also emphasizes body awareness and balance'”and you can work up to some pretty badass poses Pilates and any other exercises that focus on your core will help with your posture too. Hold each position for 5 breaths at a time. Weak, unused muscles tend to tighten and this shortening of muscle length can compact the bones of the spine (vertebrae) and worsen posture.

Keeping your body in proper alignment, improving your balance, and maintaining that alignment as you move are all part of what we call "good posture." When those things are out of whack, says Steven P. Weiniger, D.C., author of Stand Taller, Live Longer: An Anti-Aging Strategy, the health risks are great.

People who have rounded shoulders as a result of years of poor posture need to strengthen their upper back. Even while posture support brace you sit at your computer reading this article you may notice your shoulders hunched over and you are leaning into your desk. Hip, knee, and ankle joints balance your back's natural curves when you move, making it possible to maintain good posture in any position.

Return to starting position, and relax the shoulders. To eliminate this problem, strengthen the back muscles, sit all the way back in the chair, invest in a lumbar cushion to protect the lower back, keep the knees at a 90-degree angle, and place the feet flat on the floor.
